Wasn’t planning to go anywhere this past Wednesday, but ending going to three different places….
After the open mic in Woodbridge, I ended up in New Brunswick, NJ for Verbal Mayhem, a weekly open mic at Rutgers University… for me it is nostalgia because it was the open mic I used to attend as a college student, and I am also the co-founder of Verbal Mayhem as an organization (it is a topic of discussion that will come up more often as I decide to be more social- Verbal Mayhem was a place that helped me find my identity as a writer/performer, and years later it became something that was handed to myself and Omar Holmon that helped me in the areas of promotion, building, and hosting, as well as many others).
I used my former name of Assasin upon my return, I felt it was fitting to use it one more time at a place that helped create the impact of the name (I started off as Poetic Assasin) – I had a small hiccup because I wasn’t taking breathes between the lines, but that was because of the adrenaline--- I hate when that happens and even after all these years I am still learning about my breath control.
I will be attending Mayhem more often as I have always used it as a place to work on my craft- also I will be helping the younger generation if they need my help- I told the E-Board/audience that I was happy and proud that Mayhem is still going strong after all these years… it’s funny that while I was walking to get there, I was spotted in the dark by someone who heard my work years ago – after Mayhem we had a discussion about poetic devices and writing.
Always a treat to catch up with old acquaintances…
